Project Title: Carlsberg Britvic Snap Pack and KK Clip 

Subject area: Improved packaging and recycling 

Objectives: Packaging is responsible for almost half (49%) of Carlsberg Britvic’s value chain carbon emissions. Cutting the business’ climate impact is a priority. Carlsberg Britvic’s focus on ZERO Packaging Waste goes beyond carbon to drive progress towards circularity.  

Project description: First launched in 2018, Snap Pack uses innovative glue dot technology to hold cans together, removing the need for plastic rings and making multipacks more sustainable.  

Snap Pack was co-developed by Carlsberg Group and KHS GmbH, an international manufacturer of filling and packaging equipment. This ground-breaking technology is used across some of the best known beers in Carlsberg Britvic’s extensive portfolio, including Carlsberg Danish Pilsner, Birrificio Angelo Poretti, and Brooklyn Pilsner.  

In order to further scale the innovation, additional investment and capacity at Northampton Brewery was required. During early 2024, Carlsberg Britvic started the installation of a new Snap Pack line, unlocking the increased capacity needed with a £10m investment in the brewery. The new second-generation Snap Pack machine allows for double the number of Snap Pack multipacks to be produced. 

Outcomes: Snap Pack has now been scaled to 100% of our four- and six-can packs at the Northampton Brewery, eliminating plastic rings. Alongside this, At Carlsberg Britvic’s Burton Brewery, the KK Clip – a paperboard top for can packs, is now being used for 100% of Carlsberg Britvic’s brands four- and six-can packs that were previously in plastic rings.  

To further improve this format, Carlsberg Britvic also successfully trialled and rolled out removing the handle from Snap Pack to further reduce packaging, a change that was rolled out across all Carlsberg Britvic’s brands in Snap Pack in 2024. 

By eliminating plastic rings from packaging, it is estimated that Snap Pack will reduce Carlsberg Britvic’s plastic usage on the affected multipacks by up to 76%, compared to previous multipacks.  

All other packs of this size use sustainably sourced FEC boxes as an alternative.
