Maltings effluent treatment and reuse

To reduce the typical effluent volumes from a maltings by >80% whilst generating high quality process water for steeping.

The UK Malting industry embarked upon the SWAN (Save Water Attend Nature) project more than 15 years ago to prove that maltings effluent could be treated to such a high standard that the water could be reused for processing. The latest generation of the technology allows for >80% reuse of maltings effluent as process water and the discharge of <20% of the typical volumes of effluent. This significant advance is achieved via Advanced Membrane Bioreactor (aerobic) and Reverse Osmosis Plant (AMBR & RO).

Bairds are currently constructing a 57,000t maltings on their Inverness site and which will commence production in 2022. To ensure that water consumption on the new site is as sustainable as possible, Bairds Malt are installing an AMBR & RO Plant. The AMBR & RO will be fed with effluent from the existing and new maltings to generate process water for the new Maltings.

The new AMBR & RO Plant will ensure the new 57,000t maltings will require little additional water supply above that which is already delivered to site.

Sustainability at Bairds’ Inverness Maltings.

  • The new maltings under construction will commence production in 2022. The kilning equipment uses the best available technology to limit gas and electricity consumption whilst the Plant Control System has energy monitoring technology and process control that allows both consistent production quality and data led analysis of energy consumptions.
  • To ensure our water consumption by the new Maltings is as sustainable as possible, we are installing a Advanced Membrane Bioreactor and Reverse Osmosis Plant {(AMBR & RO).
  • The AMBR & RO will be fed with effluent from the existing and new maltings to generate process water for the new Maltings.
  • This AMBR & RO Plant will ensure the new 57kt maltings will require little additional water supply above that already delivered to site.
  • Asimilar AMBR & RO Plant has been operational at BML’s Witham site for 6 years and proven to be highly effective at producing high quality and consistent water.
