Title: Water efficiency Magor brewery

Subject Area: Water efficiency

Objectives: Improve water efficiency in our Magor brewery in South Wales

Project Description: We have implemented water efficiency projects in four main areas:

  1. Brewing: We have reduced evaporation rates in all brands; conducting trials in Simmer and Strip (S+S) or multi-stage boiling (MSB) for all brands and so far, implemented it on many brands.
  1. Packaging: We now cascade water from Packaging rinsers for our cooling towers – saving approximately 64% cooling tower usage a year. This was conducted by utilising redundant equipment we already had on site.
  1. Cleaning: We have completed comprehensive benchmarking across all cleaning processes and identified opportunities for cleaning efficiency. Next step is to standardize according to best practices and implement the proposed changes.

4. Condensing economiser: We have installed a condensing economiser on the boiler; cooling the flue gasses to below 60°C by condensing the vapour. This recovered water is used for heating duties around site

Outcomes: 1. Evaporation rates reduced by ~50%

  1. ~64% reduction in cooling tower water usage
  1. Significant reduction in cleaning water and chemicals to drain

4. Recovering ~25% of the boiler flue water
